What to expect at your first pelvic health physiotherapy session

We understand that many people will be anxious and unsure what will happen at their first appointment, here is an outline of what will happen:

Initially, we will fully discuss the problem you are presenting with, along with its history, any other investigations or treatment that have been used for this problem. We will then ask you details of your medical history, particularly any gynaecological history, family history and lots of detail around any pregnancies and deliveries. We will ask detail around your bladder and bowel habit and your diet and fluid intake.

Then, depending on your presenting problem, we will do an external assessment, looking at your breathing, posture, any stiffness and movement of your joints that are relevant to the condition. We will assess your abdomen, looking at any muscle separation or fascial restrictions

We will also possibly give you and explain a bladder diary, which we will ask you complete and bring along to the next session.

If you are comfortable, we will then examine your perineal region including the vagina and or rectum (adults only). This examination will look at skin condition, muscle tone, any pain, strength, endurance and any scar tissue. This examination allows us to accurately assess whether the pelvic floor muscles are directly contributing to your problem.

A full discussion and explanation will take place around my clinical diagnosis and treatment plan, with time for lots of discussion and questions. We may then have time to start you with some basic treatment, but you will leave knowing the treatment plan and your level of participation to achieve our joint goals for the subsequent sessions

We offer all new mums the opportunity to have your first appointment in the comfort of your own home. Your pelvic floor will be assessed externally with real time ultrasound imaging when at home. If further pelvic floor assessment and treatment is required, your follow up appointment will take place in clinic.
